Sustainability claims are easy to make and hard to check, so here are ours in specific terms.
The material is organic wool, sourced from Tibet and New Zealand. Wool is a renewable fibre from an animal that regrows it annually, and it biodegrades. The colour comes from eco-friendly dyes produced in Switzerland rather than cheaper, harsher alternatives.
The making is by hand. Felting requires warm water, soap, friction and barbed needles — not a factory line. Our makers are skilled craftswomen in Kathmandu, Nepal and Jaipur, India, who are paid fairly, work in safe conditions, and have the security of consistent, year-round work rather than seasonal piecework.
The designs come from Faringdon, Oxfordshire, from award-winning British designer Sonia Spencer, and they are made to last. That is the part of sustainability that gets least attention: a gift that is still on a shelf in fifteen years has done more good than one made from recycled material and thrown away in three.
Prices start at £12.99, and a gift box is included.
