Meet the Mice from Mousehole

Our felt mice are named for Mousehole, the Cornish fishing village, and there are now more than seventy of them. Each is hand needle-felted from organic lamb's wool, stands around 12cm tall, and arrives in its own little gift box. Many carry Cornish names — the Top Teacher Mouse, nose-deep in a book, is called Massen, the Cornish form of Maximus.

Named after the North Devon village, our felt sheep stand around 9cm and lean towards the crafting end of life — which makes them the obvious autumn gift, because autumn is when the knitting comes back out.

The three Knitting Nannas — Nell, Nora and Nancy — each wear tiny spectacles and hold real miniature wooden knitting needles with a scrap of work in progress. There is a particular pleasure in giving a woolly sheep, made of wool, knitting some wool. How each one is made

Sew Heart Felt is a British handmade felt gift company founded by award-winning Oxfordshire designer Sonia Spencer. Every Tiny Animal is designed in the UK and then hand needle-felted from organic lamb's wool by skilled craftswomen in Kathmandu, Nepal, using fairly traded working practices and eco-friendly Swiss dyes. Needle felting is a dry technique: fine barbed needles are worked through loose wool fibres thousands of times, tangling them into a solid sculpted shape without glue, stitching or moulds. Because every piece is built entirely by hand, no two are identical — the tilt of an ear or the set of an expression differs from one to the next.

That last point matters more than it sounds. It's the reason people who receive one tend to name it, and the reason so many of our customers end up with a small shelf of them rather than just one.

How to choose the right one

  1. Start with what they do on a Saturday, not what they do for a living. Hobbies are more personal than jobs, and people are more sentimental about them.
  2. Look for the specific detail. The gift lands when they spot the tiny knitting needles, the trowel, the walking boots — the bit that proves you were paying attention.
  3. Don't over-think size. At 9–12cm these sit on a desk, a shelf, a bedside table or a windowsill. They ask nothing of a home that's already full.
